Ash und seine Freude treffen auf ihrem Weg nach Orania City den Pokémon Trainer A.J., der eine eigene Arena besitzt, die aber nicht von der Pokémon-Liga zugelassen ist. A.J. trainiert wilde Pokémon und hat schon 98 Kämpfe hinter sich, die er alle gewonnen hat. Ash fordert ihn zum Kampf heraus und verliert, was er gar nicht fassen kann. Aber A.J. hat sehr harte Trainingsmethoden, die vor allem sein erstes Pokémon Sandan ganz außergewöhnlich stark machen. Als Ash den Pokémon von A.J. anbietet, mit ihm zu kommen, nimmt kein einziges dieses Angebot wahr. Sie lieben ihren Trainer. Team Rocket entführt in einem unbeobachteten Moment Sandan. Es kommt zu einem Kampf: Team Rocket gegen A.J., den Team Rocket verliert. Ash erkennt die Fähigkeiten von A.J., und sie trennen sich in Freundschaft.
